INFORMATION ON THE BALLOT QUESTION

Voters will also vote on whether to demolish the building formerly known as Hoover Elementary School. The ballot question reads:

Shall the following public measure be adopted?
Shall the Iowa City Community School District in the County of Johnson, State of Iowa, demolish the building known as Hoover Elementary School, located at 2200 East Court Street in Iowa City, after the completion of the 2018-19 school year, with the proceeds of any resulting salvage to be applied as specified in Iowa Code section 297.22(b)?

NOTE: The Iowa Supreme Court has ruled that the statutes do not authorize this question to be placed on the ballot and that the school board has the final say on whether the building will be demolished. As a result, the Johnson County Auditor's Office has stated that it will not count the votes on this question. Voters who are concerned about the planned demolition of the old Hoover Elementary School should direct their concerns to the school board members and the candidates for school board.
