HILLS

Residents of Hills will vote in (1) a school election, (2) a city election, (3) a referendum on a ballot measure, and (4) an election for Kirkwood Community College trustee.

WHEN AND WHERE TO VOTE

The polls will be open from 7 am to 8 pm on Tuesday, November 5. Early voting has already begun; you can vote early on weekdays between 7:45 am and 5:30 pm at the Johnson County Auditor’s Office, 913 South Dubuque Street, Iowa City, through November 4. There are also occasional satellite voting stations at the Iowa City Public Library, the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, the Coralville Public Library, and the North Liberty Community Library. (Click here for details.) You can also request an absentee ballot be mailed to you. Absentee ballots must be postmarked by November 4.

October 25 is the deadline for the ordinary voter registration process, but election-day voter registration is permitted. (Details here.)


SCHOOL ELECTION


Hills is part of the Iowa City Community School District, which also includes Coralville, Iowa City, parts of North Liberty, and University Heights, as well as some unincorporated rural areas.

BALLOT MEASURE


Hills residents pay a 1% sales and services tax. Voters will decide whether to expand the list of authorized uses for the revenues from that tax. The ballot measure reads as follows (with the newly proposed language in bold):

Shall the following public measure be adopted? 
Summary: To authorize a change in the use of the one percent (1%) local sales and services tax in the City of Hills, effective from July 1, 2015 until June 30, 2025. The use of the one percent (1%) local sales and services tax shall be changed in the City of Hills effective February 5, 2020. 
PROPOSED USE OF THE TAX:
If the change is approved, revenues from the sales and services tax shall be allocated as follows:
0% for direct property tax relief
The specific purposes for which the revenues shall otherwise be expended are:
100% for improvement of streets, sidewalks, storm sewers, sanitary sewer systems, public potable water systems, parks, economic development, upkeep and improvement of City-owned properties and any lawful purposes of the City of Hills, Iowa.
CURRENT USE OF THE TAX:
Revenues from the sales and services tax are currently allocated as follows:
0% for direct property tax relief.
The specific purposes for which the revenues are otherwise expended are:
100% for the improvement of streets, sidewalks, storm sewers, sanitary sewer systems, public potable water systems, and parks.


KIRKWOOD TRUSTEE


Voters elect the trustees of Kirkwood Community College. In Hills, the candidate for that office, Alan Jensen, is running unopposed.
